A New Beacon College for Manchester
Xaverian is celebrating after being awarded a National Beacon Award in recognition of its status as an outstanding Sixth Form college.

Learning and Skills Improvement Service
Beacon status is public recognition of the excellence and innovation that exists within the college and is given to those colleges that are outstandingly led and deliver outstanding teaching and learning.

Following a rigorous selection process - using evidence from the recent Ofsted inspection and from the Learning and Skills Council - Xaverian was selected as the first Manchester Beacon under LSIS (Learning and Skills Improvement Service) and now joins a prestigious list of sixth form colleges across the country.

As a Beacon college, Xaverian will promote and share their excellence and expertise with other colleges throughout the country.

The award was presented to Mary Hunter, Principal of Xaverian College, at a ceremony in London on 26th January by Sion Simon, Minister for Further Education: "This is an outstanding achievement. All Beacons will share their expertise and good practices to help drive up the performance of the whole sector to the high level they have attained."

The award caps a remarkable year for Xaverian, and an incredible 16 months for Mary Hunter, who took over as Principal in September 2007. In March 2008, following an inspection in January, Xaverian was judged to be outstanding in all aspects, receiving five grade 1's from inspectors. In February 2008, Xaverian became one of only 10 colleges in the UK to be awarded exemplar status by BECTA for its innovative use of technology in the classroom. The college now works with colleges throughout the country to share good practice. In August 2008 our students celebrated their best ever results, with almost 400 students moving onto university and 7 students beginning their study at Oxford and Cambridge.
